to be with you. i'm terrell brown. most of the schools in newtown, connecticut, reopen today. sandy hook elementary remains an active crime scene. the site of friday's deadly shootings will remain closed indefinitely. 26 people including 20 young children were killed there. authorities hope to soon interview two survivors of the massacre. funerals, more of them, are scheduled for today. james mattioli was 6. his family says he loved sports, was a numbers guy, and best friends with his older sister. jessica rekos, also 6, loved everything about horses. she read about them, drew them, wrote about them, for christmas she wanted cowgirl boots. we have more. >> reporter: good morning. it's a rainy and somber morning in newtown where families have begun to lay their dead to rest, and more funerals are scheduled for days to come. it's back to school today for the children of newtown, connecticut, with one exception -- students of sandy hook elementary. kenneth canfield is a fourth grader at sandy hook. he was there that tragic day. >> he heard screaming and gunshots, and the room that he was in

this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you learning, deb? >> wolf, we can tell you

the attorney general is set to head to newtown, connecticut, today after meeting with vice president joe biden at 1:00. but don't expect to see him. this is not a public event. the attorney general has scheduled to apparently meet with some of the law enforcement officials in that town and then also with some of the first responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people b

connecticut on the floor here, and i know they are coming to speak about the horrible tramgd in newtown last friday. i will abbreviate my remarks so they can have the floor and commend both of them for extraordinary statements last night at a memorial service. i will not forget ever some of the things they shared with us about this terrible tragedy. but i come to the floor this morning just for a few moments to pay tribute to one of my great friends and one of my great colleagues, danny inouye, who passed away yesterday. the majority leader has done such an extraordinary job recounting his life, and i think back what it must have meant to him as he witnessed pearl harbor at the age of 20. he said that he realized at the time that the pilots in those planes that were bombing his family and others in hawaii were people of the same ancestry as his father, and it hurt him. it hurt him as well to be branded as suspect because of his japanese origin and to see literally tens of thousands of japanese americans interned in camps because their loyalty was questioned. he took the opportunity to volunt

as has been said since the tragedy in newtown, when we look at past examples, there were two officers there, they did shoot back at columbine, it doesn't -- >> there were different protocols and the s.w.a.t. team waited outside, but colorado, speaking of columbine, passed a series of reform measures, including instant background checks, closing the gun shop -- but also allows conceal and carry, so people who pass certain tests and go through a certain test are allowed to carry. when there are so-called gun-free zones, they are actually gun-free with guards and controlled entrances. you don't just post a placard on the wall so the only people with guns are the crazies and criminals. >>> wayne lapierre said he -- he wasn't open to discussing the issue of clips and limiting the size in his interview on "meet the press" yet you do have those on the right, such as kay bailey hutchison, who said that should be part of the conversation. do you agree? >> i'm not here to defend or attack the nra or so-called gun lobby the i'm here about individual liberty. whether you call it so-called assault

, good afternoon, everyone. the entire congress is united and condemning the violence in newtown, and on the need to enforce our laws. as we continue to learn the facts, congress will examine whether there is an appropriate and constitutional response that would better protect our citizens. with regard to the year end tax issue, i would remind everyone that in the summer of 2010 senator schumer said, quote, first i don't know a single one of my colleagues who wouldn't prefer to do tax breaks for people up to $1 million. it's my understanding that that is essentially the proposal that the house of representatives is likely to send over to us later in the week. >> well, i think the other thing that's getting lost in the whole debate about the fiscal cliff is where are the savings, where are the spending cuts. the president has talked about a balanced plan, but as they've tried to negotiate with speaker boehner and the house leadership, it continues to focus on one issue and that is how much are we going to raise taxes on small businesses which is, as we said before, a terrible idea
